“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.”
One day, when God has created a new heaven and new earth, He will wipe away all of our tears. But for now, we’re at war.
We have physical tears, but also tears of the heart, the mind and the memory. God also causes tears by revealing hidden wounds that we’d rather not remember. However it’s necessary we remember them to have the wonderful experience of God healing our wounds and wiping away the tears.
As we look around tears also teach us compassion. The word compassion comes from the root com “with, together” and pati “to suffer” (think of the passion of Christ). Laughter alone can be shallow, but if we weep with those who weep we can then then laugh with those who laugh with real, true, deep joy.
Lift up your eyes to see the Saviour who wants to come into our hearts. Let us be people marked by compassion, people who wipe away other people’s tears.
